We will try to cover as much as we can manage to visit in a day. On this day, we will also prepare all the necessary equipments and materials needed for trekking. Overnight stay will be in the same hotel.
Today, we will start our journey. A scenic drive along Trisuli and Marsyangdi will take us first to Besisahar by a bus. From there, we will take a jeep to Syange. Syange is a village at an altitude of 1100 meters. It will take 9 hours for the drive altogether. We will stay in a guesthouse or lodge in Syange for tonight.
From Syange, we will begin our trekking. On the first day of trekking, we will walk along Marsyangdi river and uphill on a rocky path. There will be few ups and downs as we move past Tal village, often climbing stone steps. At places, you can enjoy the beautiful mountain views such as Manaslu. We will reach the altitude of 1950 meters after walking for six hours. We will stop at Dharapani, where we will find a lodge to spend the night.
We will continue our ascending walk on this day, as we move up to Timang at an elevation of 2460 meters. There we can have views of Annapurna II and Manaslu peaks. There will be some forest along the way as we are still in lower regions. We will pass Thanchok village and after five hours of total walk, we will reach Koto. It is at 2670 meters altitude. A lodge will serve us to take rest and spend the night.
Koto is the place from where the route of Annapurna circuit trek splits from ours. Passing through a forest, we will reach Nar river. There are few caves and pilgrims’ resting house called Dharmashala on the way. We climb the rocky trail and a beautiful view of Lamjung Himal adds to the peaks that we can see. At an altitude of 3200 meters, we will stop at Meta after 8 hours of total walk on this day. Among the few lodges available there, we will select one for night stay
Moving ahead from Meta, now we can see that we are getting to the higher altitude. The land gets barren, looking more like a desert area. We pass the villages of Chyakhu and Kyang. Few yak herds can be seen on the way. Today’s walk will start with a climb and end with a descent to Phu village which will take seven hours altogether. At the end of the day, we will be resting in a lodge at an altitude of 4050 meters.
Among the two villages this trekking path gets its named from, Phu is the first one to explore. On this day, we will stay and enjoy the beauty of this village and its people. It will also serve as an acclimatization day as we just crossed 4000 meters mark. In the village, you can see the remains of fort, called dzong in Tibetan.
There is a monastery nearby, Tashi Gompa. Yaks and sheep can be seen grazing in kharka (ground). The villagers can be seen in their daily activities like spinning yak and sheep wool. This day will provide many photographic opportunities. We will return in the lodge or stay in a camp during the night.
On this day, if weather remains good, we will go even higher. By the afternoon, we will reach Himlung Base Camp at the base of Himlung peak (7125 meters). The base camp is around 4800 meters above the sea level. On the way, we can also see a glacier. We will return along Phu river back to Phu village. The hike to and from the base camp will take four to five hours in total. We will stay in the lodge.
It’s time to move ahead from Phu village so we continue our journey. After sometime, we will reach Satya Gompa, a monastery. Near the monastery we will be crossing a bridge called Mahendra Pul and walk further enjoying the beautiful scenery around. We will walk for seven hours on this day but we won’t be gaining much altitude. Today’s destination is Nar village at an altitude of 4150 meters, just 100 meters above Phu village in elevation. The entrance to the village at the top of a hill is marked by chorten gate. We will spend the night in a camp or lodge in this village
Nar village is the second destination of this trek after Phu village, hence the name Nar Phu valley trekking. We spend a day exploring this beautiful village. There are traditional houses along the fields of barley, mustard and there are few gompas. This village is one of the most remote corners by any means. Here also the villager will be busy on their own activities like spinning and weaving woolen clothes, carrying wood, grazing yaks and sheep. You may also want to visit the gompas near to this village. We will either camp in the tents or stay in a lodge overnight.
It will be a tough day as we are going to cross Kangla pass at an altitude of 5306 meters. But the efforts will be rewarded by majestic views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho and other surrounding peaks. The path is very steep. It will take eight to nine hours to reach Ngawal village at the end of the day. Near the entrance of Ngawal, there are chortens and prayer flags. The village is also adorned with traditional architectural buildings and mani walls with prayer wheels. We will stop there in a lodge for overnight stay.
Today, we will start with a journey through sparse forest for two hours to reach Braga village. Two more hours of descending walk will take us to Manang village. We will be losing altitude significantly as we reach 3540 meters today. Manang is a busy place with number of hotels and lodges. It’s the headquarter and common point for many trekking trails. So you may see more tourists in this area. There’s one gompa that you may like to visit. Overnight stay will be in a lodge.
From Manang, we will move further down. At first we reach the village of Humde. Walking along the ups and downs, we will reach another village called Pisang. It is also a junction for other treks. Seven hours of walk will finally take us to our destination for the day. It will be Chame village situated at an altitude of 2700 meters. We will find a lodge for the night stay in Chame village.
We will continue our journey from Chame and by the afternoon, we will reach Syange. If you remember, it is the same village where we had stayed in the third day and had begun our trekking on the fourth day of our journey. From Syange, we will retrace our path backwards in a jeep. It will take about five hours to reach Besisahar. We will be staying in a lodge at Besisahar.
Once again, we will drive back to Kathmandu from Besisahar while enjoying the scenery. The drive will last for five hours after which you will be taken to a hotel. You can finish last day visit to nearby places or shopping in local markets, or you may just rest at the hotel. The night will be spent in the hotel, for the last time during this trip.
